WSOP - World Series of Poker Information

In 2002, television and film maker, Steve Lipscomb teamed up with Lakes Entertainment Inc. and its CEO and Poker champion, Lyle Berman to bring you, the fastest growing televised poker phenomenon, The World Poker Tour. Since it first aired in early 2002, the show became an instant hit and now airs in over 60 countries around the world.

The World Poker Tour consists of a series of professional high stakes poker games that take place and are filmed in 16 of the poker worlds most exclusive and fascinating venues, including, the infamous Bellagio in Las Vegas, Paris’s Aviation Club de France and aboard a luxury cruise liner sailing through the Caribbean. Over the years, to add a little spice to the show, the WPT has added some new tournaments into their roster, including, WPT’s Ladies Night and the WPT Hollywood Home Game, where celebrities battle it out, at high stakes, to be named the WPT celebrity champion.

All the tournaments are accompanied by former poker champion and premiere ambassador of poker, Mike Sexton and former child actor turned tennis pro turned poker player, Vince Van Patten, who together host and comment on all the action taking place. Their poker knowledge and witty commentaries make the game fun and easy to follow. And lets not forget their beautiful co-host, Shana Hiatt, who introduces and gets us familiar with the biographies all the players and as well, takes us on an inside tour of the glamorous locales of each tournament.

At the end of each season, the winners of each tournament, including the winner of the Hollywood Home Game, are invited to take part in the World Poker Tours, Tournament of Champions where the stakes are big and the total prize pool is even bigger. And for players viewing pleasure, last year (2004) WPTE (World Poker Tour Enterprises) developed and introduced a new five tournament series titled the PPT – The Professional Poker Tour. These five televised tournaments feature the top 200 poker pros on the planet competing to become the best of the best.

The name of the game is Texas Holdem Poker and all the WPT tournaments feature this, the world’s favorite poker game. If you aren’t very familiar with this version, don’t worry every episode features a “Poker Corner” where Mike and Vince do a good job explaining the rules and procedures. They also teach you to talk like the pros, by translating some of the popular poker slang terms and let you in on some very helpful tips that will be sure to help out your own poker strategy.

If you would like to try to make it to the televised final table at any of the WPT tournaments, it’s easier than you think. Anyone qualifies to enter the tournament (except the invite only ones) all you need is to be in the city at the time of the event and enough money to buy a seat. The buy-in amounts are not cheap however and cost about $10, 000 per seat, however some of the tournaments require only $5000 and others up to $25 000. If you would like to enter a tournament, contact the hosting casino of the particular event and they will sort you out. Now all you have to do is put your skills to the test and before you now it, you could be at the final table and be named the next WPT champion!

If you think you have the poker skills but just don’t have the kind of money to buy your seat, don’t worry there is another way for you to get in on the action. This is by winning a satellite tournament. Satellites are tournaments that are set up by many casinos and online casinos that allow players, for a much smaller buy-in, to compete in tournaments where the winner is awarded a free seat in one of the WPT tournaments. You can even win yourself a seat in the sought after Tournament of Champions. Most of these casinos will also cover all the expenses associated with attending the tournaments. So for a fraction of the cost of the regular buy-in you could end up featured on tv and playing against some of the best players in the world.
