In recent years, no doubt thanks to the huge success of major televised tournaments like the WPT and WSOP, the game of poker has become one of the most prestigious sporting events the world over. The poker phenomenon has reached players of every age, sex and race form all corners of the world and is being enjoyed via a number of mediums. One of these mediums is the internet and the fad of online poker has exploded across the world wide web.

We have seen record breaking payout's in tournament after tournament featured in the World Poker Tour and the infamous World Series of Poker, where professionals, amateurs and sometimes celebrities travel thousands of miles to compete for the prestigious title of champion (and needless to say millions in cash prizes). But now thanks to the folks at PokerStars.com a fairly new tournament is gaining in popularity and this year new records are being broken. This tournament is dubbed the WCOOP (World Championship of Online Poker), and in it’s 4 th year of operation, the prize pool is guaranteed to be at least $8 million, the largest prize in online gaming history.

The event will be taking place from September 4 th to September 18 th and will feature 15 different poker events. These events include a variety of Pot Limit, No Limit Texas Holdem and Limit Holdem, 7 Card Stud and Omaha /Hi-Lo games with buy-ins from $200 to $1000. However the main event, which every poker player dreams of winning is the $2500 buy-in No Limit Texas Holdem Game which takes place on the last day of the series and has a guaranteed prize pool of at least $2.5 million. The winner of every event is also rewarded a Poker Stars WCOOP gold bracelet.

Last years event appealed to over 30 000 players, including many professionals such as Canadian poker phenomenon Daniel Negreanu, and is said to attract much more this year with more contestants entering from Europe and Australia. And the best part is, is that all these players can play from home, saving $$$ in travel expenses which is a very attractive quality to online poker.

And if the savings in travel costs still isn’t quite enough for you to afford the buy-in, don’t worry, PokerStars.com is constantly featuring satellite competitions where you’re prize for winning the tournament is a seat in the WCOOP. The buy-ins can be very low and the payout – millions!!! Take last years winner for example, Edgar Skjervold, who qualified for the main event by winning a satellite tournament with a buy in of only $100. Skjervold turned that hundred into a half a million, not bad for two days work. So if you think you have what it takes, why not take part in this exciting, prestigious and record setting event, you could become the next World Championship of Online Poker millionaire.
