Johnny Chan - Biography

When it comes to legends they don’t get much bigger than Johnny "The Orient Express” Chan. To many poker fans, Chan sits on a pedestal as Gretzky does to a hockey fan or Michael Jordon to any basketball fan. Born in Canton China in 1957 The Chan family moved to the United States about ten years later. They arrived in Phoenix but soon moved and settled in Houston Texas. Here his family opened a number of restaurants where Chan had originally meant to work to make his living. But before he could finish his degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston in the early eighties, Johnny discovered the game of poker, dropped out of school, moved to Las Veags and the rest is history.

A short appearance in the poker film "Rounders" made Johnny Chan a recognizable face in the poker world but Chan’s biggest claim to fame is his record breaking number of World Series of Poker wins. Chan currently holds 10 championship titles (Doyle Brunson has recently tied him), more than any other poker professional in the game today. His wins are in a variety of no limit and pot limit events, but it was his 1987 and 1988 consecutive main event wins that set Johnny apart from the competition. Never has any player won consecutive No Limit Texas Holdem main events. Chan even almost made it three in row but in the end lost out to rival Phil Hellmuth (who currently holds 9 WSOP titles).

To his opponents Chan can be quite intimidating but is also known to crack a joke or two when the tension seems to be too thick. However, the proud father of six children doesn't spend all of his time at the poker table, he also owns a fast-food franchise in one of his favorite Las Vegas Hotels. And with his poker expertise Johnny does a lot of consulting work, for casinos and poker game makers, and is known to write articles for a number of specialized magazines, etc.

In 2002 Johnny Chan, who always brings a "lucky orange" to the table with him, was rewarded a great honor and was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.
